Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup high-quality popcorn kernels
  • 1 tablespoon butter or more to taste, optional
  • Salt to taste

NOTE

  • Make sure the inside of the pot is completely drybefore heating the oil in it, or else the oil will sputter.

Instructions

  • Begin by heating a 3-quart thick-bottomed saucepan on medium-high heat with your desired oil. If using coconut oil, make sure all solid oil melts.
  • Add 3-4 popcorn kernels to the heated oil and wait for them to pop.
  • Once the kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels evenly into the saucepan.
  • Cover the saucepan and remove it from the heat .Count out loud for 30 seconds. This will bring all of the other kernels to an ear-popping temperature.
  • Return the saucepan to the heat. The popcorn should start popping soon, all at once. As soon as the popping starts in earnest, shake the saucepan gently by moving it back and forth over the burner.
  • Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove the saucepan from the heat. Remove the lid and immediately dump the popcorn into a wide bowl. With this technique, almost all of the kernels pop without burning.
  • If you wish to add melted butter, melt it in the empty hot saucepan. Then drizzle the melted butter over the popcorn and toss to distribute.
  • Lastly, sprinkle the popcorn with salt to taste,or try out some fun toppings such as Spanish smoked paprika, nutritional yeast, cayenne powder, chili pepper, curry powder, cumin, or grated Parmesan cheese.Enjoy your homemade popcorn!
